Working in the non-profit sector can be viewed by the public as all sunshine and rainbows, with people dedicating their time for causes they are passionate about. But even if this brilliant sector is your true calling, it is still work, and it is still sometimes hard.
Since 2020, the sector has had increasing challenges, and that pressure very quickly starts building on employees and in some cases, on volunteers too. That can have a huge impact on your mental health and wellbeing—I know it does on mine.
When you are looking for a new role, there are additional considerations, which can add to these existing pressures. This can include, the uncertainty of the process, dealing with rejection, and the pressure to secure a position that aligns with your values. It’s important to acknowledge these feelings and take steps to look after yourself during your job search.
There are lots of reasons that you might be looking for a new job, you might feel ready for a bigger challenge, seek a higher salary or feel burned out in your current role. Whatever the reasons, it can be easy for these to be forgotten in the frustration of the job search.
Here are some tips to help you maintain your mental health while searching for a new job:
Set realistic goals and boundaries
The job hunt can be overwhelming if you’re spending all your time scrolling through job boards and tweaking your CV, just to be ghosted. Set aside specific time each day or week to focus on your search and give yourself permission to step away when you’ve had enough.
Keeping organised will help you feel in control, have documents/key profile information readily available, so you can apply for jobs as they arise. You can also download our application tracker to keep track of your live applications.
Take breaks and practise self-care
Job searching is a task, and like any other task, it’s important to take regular breaks to recharge. Go for a walk, spend time with loved ones, or do a hobby that brings you joy.
Seek support and stay connected
Whether it’s talking to a friend a mentor, friendly recruiter, or connecting with others in your network, sharing your experiences can help ease feelings of isolation and frustration. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.
Celebrate small wins
Even if you don’t land the job straight away, there are victories worth celebrating along the way. Completing an application, receiving positive feedback on your CV (or any at all), or getting an interview invite are all steps in the right direction.
Handling ‘rejection’
It is a tough job market, and not landing your ideal/dream role can be tough. Use feedback constructively and refine your approach accordingly to help with future applications.
Remember, the job search is a process, and it’s okay to feel a mix of emotions along the way. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as finding the right role, and often the root cause of looking for one. Be kind to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help if you need it.
