Primary School Numeracy Supporter
Numeracy, like literacy, is a core life skill. Yet many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, have difficulties with maths.
Number Champions trains volunteer Numeracy Supporters to use games and other creative activities in one-to-one sessions to help children acquire interest, confidence, and skills in maths. We work with school years 2 and 3 (ages six to eight) as research shows that early intervention is most effective. Overcoming “the maths barrier” can put the child back on track to learn in classroom lessons and to achieve their educational potential.
Sessions are weekly, in school during school hours. You will work with the same child for the full school year so that you can build a friendly and positive learning environment. Volunteers typically work with three children in consecutive half hour sessions, but if you have limited time you can work with two children only.
We have experienced teachers volunteering with us as “Mentors” to train our Numeracy Supporters and to give them advice and support through the year. At your training, you will be given a kit of concrete materials and shown how to use them to help children to learn. We will also introduce you to our extensive online library of teaching resources.
