Role title: Volunteer Mentor       

Responsible to: MAPS Team

Organisation: MAPS Mentoring

Role: To provide 1:1 mentoring to an allocated young person within the London Borough of Sutton.

Location: Generally, within the London Borough of Sutton. Mentoring will take place either out in the community or within the young person’s school.

Time commitment: Minimum 1 hour per week for 12 months.  

Responsibilities              

  • To meet with your allocated young person once per week for one year either in the community or in school.
  • To provide support and practical guidance as well as inspiring and motivating a young person.
  • To complete an expense form on a monthly basis.
  • To participate in monthly supervision with your Practitioner, either face to face or by phone call.
  • To refer to Mentoring Practitioner with any concerns/safeguarding issues.
  • To carry out mentoring role in line with risk assessment, child safeguarding practices and MAPS protocols.
  • To uphold the Volunteer Centre Sutton core principles, vision, culture and values and abide by the policies and procedures as per our volunteer handbook.

Qualities and skills required:    

  • A positive attitude towards young people and a desire to support them in professional setting
  • Ability be a positive role model for young people at all times
  • Ability to develop a relationships/build rapport with children and young people  
  • Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries with children and young people and family/carers
  • Ability to listen effectively
  • Ability to keep sensitive personal information confidential and secure
  • Ability to manage time professionally i.e. punctuality
  • Ability to attend and receive monthly supervision   
  • Ability to adhere to MAPS safeguarding policy
  • Ability to adhere to Volunteer Centre Sutton’s Equality and Diversity policy
  • Ability to demonstrate commitment and patience
  • Ability to be non judgemental  
  • A willingness to commit to a volunteer mentor relationship for one calendar year

Training and support     

  • A full day of training to support you in becoming a confident and successful mentor.
  • Ongoing support and supervision will be given by your MAPS Practitioner either in person or via Teams/telephone
  • Regular newsletters, updates and news from the MAPS team will be sent to you
  • Access to the Mentor Whatsapp group

Driving license requirements: A driving licence and access to a car is beneficial however not essential.

Volunteer expenses: £10 per week budget given per mentor/mentee pair to spend on food/drinks/activities as well as to cover mileage/public transport costs.

Any other requirements: To complete all relevant paperwork in line with safe recruitment protocols and procedures which include an enhanced DBS, self declaration form and two personal references.
