The Arthur Findlay College is a global centre within the Spiritualist movement - a residential centre where students can study Spiritualist philosophy and religious practice, Spiritualist healing and awareness, spiritual and psychic unfolding, and kindred disciplines.

Challenges in recruiting for a Strategy Manager

The SNU were looking to appoint someone at short notice to cover long term absence of their General Manager. They required someone who could provide strategic leadership and would be able to hit the ground running. They took this opportunity to review the role and recruit someone with change management experience, whilst also covering the General Manager role, which lead us to advertising for a Strategy Manager.

The role required someone on site 5 days per week with the possibility of some remote working, which made the search more challenging as a large majority of candidates are in fact looking for a hybrid working arrangement.

Additionally, being a 12-month fixed term contract (FTC) role, finding suitable applicants with the relevant experience who would be interested in a temporary position, also narrowed our candidate pool further.

What SNU wanted to achieve

The SNU were looking to appoint a college Strategy Manager who would be able to confidently build on their previous success, modernising a lot of their approaches whilst bringing about positive change within the organisation.

They felt some of their systems were outdated and required someone who was knowledgeable of modern IT systems who could facilitate change.

They wanted to better market and promote their existing courses and it was extremely important to the SNU for the successful applicant to be able to provide a critical eye on everything and make the required recommendations for improvement.

They also required someone with people management experience and a genuine ability and interest in motivating others.

What TPP did

After discussing the details of the role, and due to the complexity of the search, we began a search providing our Premium Service. This included:

  • Detailed job description assistance (role design)

  • A targeted and collaborative search approach where our Education Team worked closely with our Leadership & Governance team to find the most suitable candidates through their extensive network.

  • A bespoke candidate pack created by TPP to promote the work of the SNU, their vision and mission as well as their attractive benefits.

  • A comprehensive advertising campaign including outreach via our TPP database and website, specialist job boards social media and targeted approaches using LinkedIn Recruiter.

As the need to fill the position was time sensitive, TPP worked quickly but thoroughly and successfully appointed a new Strategy Manager at the SNU with the candidate starting their new role 3 weeks after our initial strategy meeting.
