What APM wanted to achieve
APM wanted to hire a Digital Learning Manager capable of continuing the development and innovation of their online learning services, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and maintaining high-quality offerings.
Their aim was to hire someone who would continue to produce high-quality content for APM Learning and the professional development newsletter. They would oversee the procurement and implementation of a new e-learning platform and effectively manage relationships with internal teams and external subject matter experts (SMEs) to enhance content quality.
Challenges in recruiting for a Digital Learning Manager
The existing Digital Learning Manager, who played a pivotal role in launching and growing APM’s digital learning offerings, was approaching retirement. APM needed to find a suitable replacement who could maintain and further develop their online learning services.
The outgoing manager had developed their platform from inception, making it difficult to find a candidate with comparable experience, and with the market being competitive for digital and e-learning professionals, it made it more challenging.
APM’s office is in Princes Risborough which also posed a challenge in attracting candidates willing to commute periodically to outside London.
What TPP did
TPP's specialist Education & Training team had an initial briefing with APM to ensure the best possible outcome. Here are some of the main ways TPP supported APM throughout this campaign:
- We discussed the vacancy in detail with APM to ensure the job description and anything disclosed to candidates would accurately reflect the requirements of the role and attract the right candidates from the outset.
- TPP conducted a targeted search for candidates with strong digital learning, project management, and stakeholder management skills. This involved leveraging TPP’s existing network, as well as targeted advertising and proactive headhunting using various tools.
- We advised APM of sourcing candidates with suitable skills from other sectors, such as universities or training providers, alongside awarding or membership bodies to extend the reach.
- We conducted a thorough screening of candidates, providing profiles of those that met the requirements of the role, including highlighting availability, location, and suitability for the role.
- We coordinated a two-stage interview process, including a presentation task to assess candidates' understanding of digital learning in professional membership bodies.
What TPP achieved
TPP successfully placed a candidate with a strong background in digital learning and project management, who impressed APM with their presentation and interview performance.
APM provided positive feedback on the placement process, highlighting the professionalism and smoothness of the process.
The placed candidate was delighted with their new role, which, due to their existing skills and experience, they have every chance of being able to effectively manage the transition and take on the exciting challenge of further developing APM’s digital learning platform.
